AAW is in the cloud now
AAW is in the cloud now
This post is basically for Z2k
This week we have modified our backup scripts to back up all logfiles to Amazon S3 instead of our backup ftp server. This ftp and wput never worked too well, ruining almost all backups which I had to redo manually...
Seeing that 1 month of logfile backups created cost of US$ 0.07 I decided to also back up my purrrsonal data to the cloud. Amazon is one of the very big players in cloud computing and I'm very confident they'll keep my data safe and accessible. The goal is to get rid of our power hungry home server. That thingy consumes about 90W power when idling with hard disks spinned down. Now multiply this with 30*24*90=64.8 KwH (*hopes the unit is international*)
At 16 cent/KwH this is € 10,37 or ~$14.50 per month. I can rent more than 96 GB in the Amazon cloud which is mirrored to multiple data centers inside the EU for maximum availability. And have a 100% fail-proof backup drive.
Now the ultimate question: Can you suggest a backup software for S3? I'd pay no more than $30 though. I'm trying 'CloudBerry' right now and it's supposed to do limited versioning which is very convenient to back up server scripts and source codes.

Re: AAW is in the cloud now
Well, I'm not really into the cloud computing wagon yet, mostly because I don't have a good enough internet connection (only one I have available 100% of the time is a 256 kbps downstream, 128 kbps upstream, 3G modem connection for "emergencies"). Still, you can try a free alternative I found: S3 Backup. Also, take a look here: http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/ ... egoryID=66 and if you can take a look into Ubuntu One, I have heard it uses S3 as the underlying storage service, so it might work as well, with some tweaking.

The best I found so far is the "CloudBerry Online Backup" but it costs $30. I'd love to see a free backup solution (purrhaps with version control)...

Sorry. I would like to help you with this one, but it is over my head.
Get it? Cloud... over my head..
Ah, never mind.

It's exactly that. Cloud Computing means you actually rent virtual computer power... what SaS promised but never did.

What has the Special Air Service got to do with this? Unless... it's all a conspiracy!

Wait until you get the service bill...
