Yeah, Z2k's right. There are ALOT of short story magazines and anthologies that are published each year. Also at the end of each year, the best short stories in each genre are compiled into a book. By publishing some short stories first I think that it will be easier to get a book published once the time comes.
Re: Becoming a novelist
That might be true, a literary agent or publisher may not take you seriously without something to write on your quiry. But then again, if they actually read a chapter from the manuscript of an unknown (some do) and it's decent, there's nothing to stop them from going ahead and representing you.

Re: Becoming a novelist
And of course you're right. Publishers love to see unknown writers come in with something fresh and new. And we've all seen people who get famous from the first thing they ever publish. I just think it's easier for me personally to get started with short stories.
Young adult = ???
Exactly how young is young adult? I wanted to write in the YA category (just a feeling that I'll have a better chance there) but I dunno whether to dumb my vocab down to a ~13 year old's level or just keep on going at my ~17 year old level.
Re: Becoming a novelist
That's big news to me. "Fresh and new" = no idea if it's ever sold. Publishers stick to the ordinary stuff which already has a fanbase. Publishers don't want to please the audience, but they want to make money. Just my EUR 0.02 about the german publishers...agito_0291 wrote:Publishers love to see unknown writers come in with something fresh and new.
What do you call a dinosaur with an extended vocabulary? A thesaurus.

I can help out with some german law.Elvin wrote:Exactly how young is young adult? I wanted to write in the YA category (just a feeling that I'll have a better chance there) but I dunno whether to dumb my vocab down to a ~13 year old's level or just keep on going at my ~17 year old level.
A child is a person of 14 years and below.
Adolescent is any young person from 14 to 18 years.
Young adults are of age 18-27. (§ 7 Abs. 1 Nr. 3 SGB VIII)
Juvenile law can be used for young adults of 18-20 years if the offender acts immature. After reaching 21 years this option is no longer possible, so you're adult by law when turning 21 years. In Japan it's 20 years.
So criminal law says, a "young adult" is 18-21 while other laws allow 18-27 years of age.
A very good and secure way to find out is just to call the people running the contest and ask
Does this help you in any way?

I meant in terms of book categories, young adult category seems to be around 12 to 17. Knowing law is always good though . I guess I shouldn't worry too much about it.
Re: Becoming a novelist
Perhaps they're afraid to call them adolescents?

Re: Becoming a novelist
Perhaps, it does kind of have a negative connotation added to it, the like naive and trouble making age
