...yes
But I try to stay away from the hentai ones if I can (meaning I don't play eroge). Any that you like in particular Elvin (besides Higurashi) or are you just leading me into a trap!

Re: The visual novel
I've been helping with the Remember11 translation project (more translators are always wanted, if anyone has any working nihon-go knowledge here). The last one I've played is The Witchhunt's translation of Umineko no Naku Koro Ni ep 3, and I loved it (getting proportionally more awsome each ep
). I've actually never played the higu visual novels, I have Matsuri for the PS2 but it's on the list of games to play.
You can't avoid eroge if you're a big visual novel fan, like 95% of them have some adult content. What are some of your favorites?

There are so many things that I'm responding to I think I will quote you in parts so not to confuse.
How much knowledge counts as "knowledge" for your translating?
So you would recommend it then? I've been hesitant to pick it up.

And of course you're right. In fact now that I think about it, what I've read is just about split in half. And most of the awesome anime that come from visual novels are eroge. My favorite big company visual novel right now, as well as what I'm playing currently, is Clannad but I also enjoyed True Remembrance and Fate/Stay Night (the two routes that didn't become anime. I thought the first one was kinda lame in my eyes). Yet my first visual novel (shuffle) still holds a special place in my heart. To me it was the most visually appealing of them all so far. It had the most vivid character designs and a genuinely fun atmosphere. How about you? Re: The visual novel
I'm currently using a site to convert kanji into romanji, as I know a lot more words by sound than text. It also translates key words in the sentence, and I'm using atlus to give me a general idea of the meaning before I take it on myself. So, my idea of knowledge is being able to generally follow a conversation my ear, even if you don't know the exact meaning of each word.
The umineko drawing style takes some getting used to, but you won't even care after a while. Once the story starts moving, it's quite an interesting read.
I also enjoyed clannad, but found it to drag on at some places (it really was too long, including all the side stories). My favorites are Phantom of Inferno (the first one I've ever played) for its action and drama, Ever17 for its awsome ending, and Fate/Stay Night/Tsukihime for their engaging story. I already mentioned Umineko, which gets more and more exciting, and Utawarerumono for its characters. Of course, I've also played my fair share of throw-aways.

Re: The visual novel
Well, the only visual novel I ever went through is Planetarian. I didn't had anything else to read at the moment, so I thought I'd give it a try. A friend tried to get me reading Higurashi's, but he made the mistake of giving me Higurashi Daybreak along with them. You can guess what happened.
So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph... because good is DUMB!
Re: The visual novel
You read the visual novel while never getting around to daybreak? D:

Re: The visual novel
@Elvin: How could I forget Ever17!
That one was great! And Utawarerumono really did have some great characters but what I loved most about that one was with the unique system of play. I love strategic battle games (fire emblem, advance wars ect...) so it was awesome that it did something like that.

You don't see yourself clearly at all. You're not like anyone I've ever known. You Fascinate me.

The system with the "super bar" saved the strat. component for me, otherwise it probably would've been pretty dull without the items or combo skills of the PS2 port. The voice actors really earned their pay, they captured their characters perfectly.
