One should place this series in its proper context. It was first aired back in 1995, making it a fairly old series, anime wise. It does capture the spirit of its time, which was in later series copied to death. I mean, this was a time of harem anime (think Tenchi Muyo which is of the same year), where there are teams of superpowered people working towards a goal (think El Hazard, also of that year). Besides, if you watch its competitors for great anime that year, the only ones really standing out were Evangelion, 3x3 eyes & Ghost In The Shell. All the others were mediocre at best, so Fushigi Yugi was king of mediocrity (one eye in the land of the blind).
