Duct tape (or duck tape, whichever) was actually developed from WWII surplus medical tape. They just put a waterproof plastic backing on it. Some say the name duck tape came from the fact water ran off it.

I always thought it was called duct tape because it was the only tape that would stick and hold to the metal ducts.
