Well, in Dutch you say "snoep of je leven" (candy or your life) so one of my friends said: "okay, my life" and the kiddies said: "we don't want your life, we'd rather take the candy".
So the next day she told us and said: "If they just want the candy, why don't they just ask for it."
My substitute brother said: "Well, if they'd just say "CANDY!" it'd be rude."
Eventually we all agreed it was in fact also rude to say "snoep of je leven"... It was a very educational conversation.
Don't feed me violins.
