*Lorelei was about to say something when Keon got up. Now that she knew Keon’s secret, she felt she could relate to the boy better. Maybe he wasn’t that bad after all. Lorelei thought about what to say next, but there were Toru and Selene. She sighed a little relieved. Her socialising skills were hardly what they should be, and she wasn’t really planning on exploiting them any further any time soon, so this was the perfect save for her. Lorelei just stayed in the background and waited to see the outcome.*

*It couldn't be, Keon was afraid, was it a trap? He couldn't sense any trap. Kimara's hands were on his shoulders, urging him forward. All he could sense from her was encouragement and assurance. He felt a kindness from her that he had only felt from his mother. Keon began to relax.*

Keon nodded: Yes, that's my mom, and dad...... Please, can I have it, it's..... it's the only picture I have of my mom.

*Keon was afraid the woman would want to keep the picture. Then Selene started toward him. Keon could feel the surprise, almost shock in her mind. He reached up and realized, he'd forgotten to put on his hat. Keon almost screamed. She knew! She'd seen it and was shocked. He turned to try to run around Kimara but ran into Lorelei. Near panic he turned back, but Selene was already there, right in front of him. She knelt down, and wrapped her arms around him.*

Selene: I..... I never knew, I have a brother. All this time, I never knew. *She let go and sat back, handing Keon the picture.*

Lola: He's your brother? He doesn't look like you.

Selene laughed: Of course not, we had different mama's, but the same daddy.

*Toru had come in behind Selene, and when she knelt down found himself looking right at Lorelei. He couldn't help noticing her ramune spattered school uniform, and the quick glare she'd shot his direction.*

Toru: Ah.... Lorelei, I'm really sorry about that. I just don't know what came over me. If there's any way I can make it up to you.......

Keon: Don't lie to her, Toru. You know it wasn't your fault, I can tell. She shouldn't be angry at you, I did it, even if I didn't mean to. I'm sorry Toru, I didn't trust you. *Keon looked at Lorelei.* Don't be angry at Toru. Maybe, someday, you can forgive me.

*Lorelei sighed.*

Lorelei: Stop apologising, both of you. I wasn’t glaring at you because I’m angry at you, Toru. I was glaring at you because that’s what I do. I’m only nice to kids, Kaede and Rosalynn, so don’t expect me to stop glaring at you any time soon. And you, Keon, shouldn’t worry about it. If I were in your position I would’ve probably done the same so I can’t really blame you. You’re actually not that bad, you know. But if you tell anyone at school that I said any of this I will deny everything and then tear you apart, piece by piece.

*She smiled cheerfully before turning to get a cookie.*

*Keon felt relieved, and a bit frightened at the same time.*

Keon: You don't hate me? Not even for these? *He touched the horns on his head.* I thought everyone would.... but, it's so different here. *Keon smiled.* Thank you Lorelei, and I swear, I'll never say a word to anyone.

Toru laughed: But I might, now that I've got some blackmail material to hold over Lorelei. *She turned and glared at him again.

Keon: But, she said she'd tear you apart if you said anything.

Toru: She'd have to catch me first. *Still laughing.*

*Keon was confused, the humor he felt from Toru didn't seem to match what he was saying. He stepped between Toru and Lorelei.*

Keon scowled: No you won't. I'll know if you're going to say anything and I'll stop you. I won't let you hurt Lorelei.

*Toru tried to hold back his laughter, seeing Keon trying to defend Lorelei.*

Toru: Oh, don't get your antennas bent out of shape. I wouldn't say anything....... I promise. I was just joking.

Keon: Oh....

*Keon turned a bit red faced. He should have realized Toru was joking, from what he had been sensing. Why had he wanted to defend Lorelei? She didn't even like him...... But, she didn't hate him either.

*Lorelei sighed and shook her head. Then she turned to Lola.*

Lorelei: Seeing as how you’ve got plenty of people to play with, I’ll be going home for a little while now, okay?

Lola: Okay..

*Lorelei waved cassualy at them and walked to the door.*

*Keon hurried past Selene and Toru, to the doorway.*

Keon: Goodbye Lorelei,........ um.... I'll see you tomorrow.... in school. Ok?

*Keon quickly turned back to the room, a bit red faced. He had wanted to ask the girl to stay for a bit, but he knew she felt uncomfortable with the group of people there. He would have liked to talk with her, maybe he could he could figure out what it was he felt. But, that would have to wait for a better time, when there weren't so many around.*

Selene: Keon, I'd like you to come with me. There's a lot of things I'd like to talk to you about.

Keon backed toward the door: Ah, I really have to go. I have to find a place to stay........ ummm...... it's getting a little late and........ *Keon bumped into Toru who had gotten between him and the door.*

Toru: Oh no. I'm not going to let you run off on me again. *Keon spun around and looked at Toru. Toru could see the fear that still haunted his new friend.* You gotta trust somebody sometime, Keon. And if you can't trust family, who can you trust?

Keon looked at Selene: I don't know. I didn't have any family, then, she tells me that I'm her brother...... but... but we don't look at all alike. How can her father be my father?

Kimara: Your wrong Keon. I can see it in your eyes, and in your face, when you smiled, there is a family resemblance between you and Selene.

Selene: Keon, twenty two years ago, when the monster first began attacking the city, the prison where my father was being held was attacked. Almost everyone was killed. They accounted for all but a few of the prisoners, one of those missing was my father. I searched for years, Keon, for any clue as to what had happened to my father. I'd given up, till Toru told me that his new friend was special, an esper. I knew there was something special about you when I first met you at the school, I just didn't know what. Then, I learned your name is Kanemaki........ Keon, That man in your picture is my father.

*Keon wanted to believe. It would be something special, something amazing, to have someone, some family. But, still, he found it hard to trust this woman who had scared him almost witless just a few hours ago. Toru could see the hesitation in his friend. He had to help in some way.*

Toru: How about coming over to my house, Keon. You can stay with me till you find a room. My mom and dad were worried about you, they'll be glad to know your alright, and Kaede was pretty worried too.

*Keon took his hat, that Lola brought for him, and pulled it on his head. He notice Lola frowning.*

Lola, pouting: You shouldn't wear that old hat, you look really cool without it.

Keon: Oh..... well maybe.... but some people don't think that. *He looked back at Toru, then closed his eyes. For a moment, he searched as hard and as deep as he had ever with anyone. He searched not just toru, but the others around him and could find no animosity, no hidden agendas.* Well, ok, I'll go with you. I guess I have to learn to trust my friend.
