Are you guys going to bypass the literary agents and submit straight to the publishers?

Perhaps, it does kind of have a negative connotation added to it, the like naive and trouble making age

I meant in terms of book categories, young adult category seems to be around 12 to 17. Knowing law is always good though . I guess I shouldn't worry too much about it.

Exactly how young is young adult? I wanted to write in the YA category (just a feeling that I'll have a better chance there) but I dunno whether to dumb my vocab down to a ~13 year old's level or just keep on going at my ~17 year old level.

That might be true, a literary agent or publisher may not take you seriously without something to write on your quiry. But then again, if they actually read a chapter from the manuscript of an unknown (some do) and it's decent, there's nothing to stop them from going ahead and representing you.

How do you go about publishing a (single) short story?

I'll give you a good critique if you do It might be better if you post a chapter at a time, lest a tl;dr is forced. I don't have much literary know-how, but if you're planning to take this seriously I can be an ass and tell you what parts I don't like, if there are any.
