Why haven't (m)any Japanese actors taken the world stage?

Post by Elvin » April 24th, 2009, 6:20 am

Really, there's like no one who's really made it over here. Lack of talent? No one speaks English? Too shy?

I was being silly and thinking of who'd be a good fit with one of the Japanese characters in one of my stories. These were my criteria

Can pass themself off as 19, not too old, not too kiddy
Speaks English perfectly, no hint of accent
Talented actor, able to use their face/body language well and manipulate their voices well to show their emotion
Relatively good looking
Confidence
Able to crack a joke and sound witty as naturally as an English costar.

My mental list of actors that fit the profile dwindled down to 0 half way down the list. Don't they have any aspirations to make it big?

#2 on your list just killed it. They're Japanese, not American. You can't expect them to speak our language without an accent.
Dogs have owners, Cats have staff

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

I'm sure there are some specialist schools that teach you how to speak English like that at a younger age, but unless their parents are training them to be an actor starting then I guess it's kind of useless to hope one of those rare kids'll grow up to be an actor.

Actors like Jackie Chan and Jet Li made it here with out outstanding English, but that was during the age of kung-fu movies. There are always Japanese raised in English speaking countries, but from my knowledge they're pretty rare too. I guess it'll be stuck with a Chinese or Korean person passing off as jp if my book ever gets a movie adaption

Well there goes my idea for a video/voice chat. I am actually suprised that you can't speak English. You comunicate so well through text.
There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

There are a lot of people like that. Or, IMO, that aren't too confident on their pronunciation. Like me.

Ditto with Z2k. If I really REALLY tried I could probably speak understandable Spanish (not anymore thought...I haven't in almost 3 years) but 99% of the time I wouldn't be confident enough to do it.
