basically, I guess, When using a boom mic, I know it does connect to the camera right? And does the sound record to the film itself or do you have to go and sync it?

or speaking of the syncing part, are there boom mics that will just record the sound. If say your using a camera that doesn't have a connection piece for one?

Well, basically if you want to record GOOD audio like in a feature film, you would do a dual system. The camera recording source audio as a reference and a separate recording system for the real sound. A shotgun mic is considered Hypercardiod in the pickup pattern, meaning it is extremely directional. That is why the operator is always using headphones. You can actually hear when you zero in. As for the cameras and gear, if you are thinking indy budget or less, than you will be shooting video and not film. That gives you the option to record relatively high quality audio directly to the camera. Any camera worth its salt has balanced audio inputs. If you do not have a stereo pair of XLR inputs, you will have a hard time working with pro gear. All the sennheiser, audio-technical, azden, shure, etc mics will be using balanced audio, and most of them will be requiring phantom power from the camera. XLRs are capable of handling power and signal at the same time due to their inverse polarity. If you get a camera that doesn't have balanced audio, you better hope it at least has a mini-jack input. You can buy adapters that convert inbalanced to balanced for these cameras. Beachtek is one of the companies I have used in the past. A new thing that is coming into the film-making world are DSLRs that are capable of handling 24p HD video. The new canon 7D is a rockstar in this category. Of course, with these smaller cameras, you get great image, but terrible sound. Most people are recording to solid-state recorders separate from the camera itself. The zoom H2 and H3 are a common, inexpensive solution. Of course you must be very diligent to maintain sync points. Clap boards, etc are always a good idea.
Hope this is usefull!
