Are DVDs dead?

Post by Sakura » March 9th, 2008, 1:15 am

I got another 500 GB external hard disk for my anime. You dont need to copy them every 5th year and theyre fast and convenient. DVDs is dead isnt it?

Dvd is still viable as a medium for individual movies, standard definition, and for storage of large amounts of data in a small portable package. It's easier to move a disc around than a hard drive. With thumb drives getting bigger all the time, they are taking over as a way to move files, but still cost a lot compared to dvds. Blue ray may soon replace the dvd, but needs some time to mature, and for prices to drop. Cheap, super sized hard drives are really the way to go for the most permanent storage, though hard drives do fail, and in time can lose their magnetic data. A research group here has developed a holographic disc that can hold in excess of 1 terabyte on a dvd sized disc, but the technology is a bit of a ways off yet. Who knows what the next, molecular or atomic level storage?

3D storage. Remember I'm german :meh: We're already storing stuff on crystals.

Very advanced, and very expensive!

An external 500 Gb drive for 80 Euro..? I'm gonna cry... With that money here you can only buy a 320 Gb SATA drive, nothing more...

Hmmm, good price, does it have eSATA?

Best Buy has a WD external 500g for $120, around 77euro. They also have a Seagate 500gb external with usb2 and eSATA for $130, Maybe I should pick one of those up, I need to back up this mess of mine. Ooo, they have a 750gb Seagate for $170, thats $40 more for and extra 250gb, comes with backup software.

Wait!!! I want one of those wide screen LCD monitors......... like the 22" Westinghouse, $210. It would be a lot nicer than my 17" crt. Darn, looks in wallet, it would save on the electric bill too, wouldn't it?

Darn, now I need to stop at Best Buy when I get up to the cities on Tuesday.

Ok so DVD's are not dead. Just bought myself a 'DVD Dispenser' and 2 boxes of DVD+R. Press a button and a single DVD is ejected in the tray. If I get my camera working I'll make a photo. 7 Euro only.

Wait, wait, are those the ones that store your DVDs, index the contents and give you the DVD with the info you need when you query it on your PC? I heard there was a shipment of one of those here last time and the stock went faster than you could say "What, for real?". They cost a pretty penny, too, around 150 USD.
